Photos of my art instructor’s class demo included this striking image after cropping, and it pursued me relentlessly from that moment on. (Obey your muse!)

In planning to make art of this, I saw a linear medium working well. I chose graphite.

Later, I saw that more developed light and shadow would enhance the impact of the intense facial expression–both complementing, and contrasting with, the simple outlines of shoulder, back, and arm. It changed from a figure to a portrait.–Carol
