‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ from Vermeer
Art studio exercise: copy this famous painting by Vermeer in pastel on paper board. Aim: learn more about hue, chroma, value, and technique–in traditional painter’s approach to a young female face. Yes, this took days to do, but I learned so much that I still use: especially how to move from a thumbnail-size sketch to a larger-scale artwork.–An art in itself!

I still need to learn that kind of patience in my art. Well done!

Hi Carol and Miss Gentileschi, I am really enjoying seeing your approaches to this work. I had the extreme good fortune to visit the Moritzhaus in Den Haag last year and saw the original painting. You know what, it fell totally flat with me. Not the fault of the painting, but the relentless promotion of this image has managed to take away, for me at least, any sense of revelation of seeing the image anew. That is where both of your works step in. There is familiarity but also reinvention. I was moved by the other Vermeers I saw, which was why it was so disappointing to me that I couldn’t respond in the same way to this painting.

I sure this one really has suffered from the over-exposure in our world, especially online. Sorry to imagine the actual painting loses its charisma too!
