Mercedes, 18×24″ graphite on paper

While you don’t see her arms and hands painting in this sketch of fellow artist Mercedes, maybe you notice her attention really is elsewhere. I never realized as I do now, how silly I am to try to draw other artists at work. Why?

Her eyes, her face, her shoulders, are all directing energy to her painting. And I am now learning that, for a portrait, I want to ask my subject to look at me. It’s the only way to get a glimpse into the soul for YOU, the art viewer! (Silly me! Maybe other portraitists figured this out long ago.)
