The Art of Rivalry: Four Friendships, Betrayals, and Breakthroughs in Modern Art by Sebastian Smee. [New York: Random House, 2016]. My fascinated re-reading now of this book, that explores that thing artists live with, but can hardly can fathom why: our artistic friendships!

Why? I love finding a new way to grasp what drove Matisse and Picasso, Manet and Degas, Pollock and de Kooning; Freud and Bacon as artistic friends. I am reading it again– a couple of years later–to compare and contrast some of my own experiences with this.
